EDUCATION
“Providing our children with a quality education is one of the most important challenges North Carolina faces.”
As a mother, Susan Morris wants greater accountability for failing schools and an emphasis on core subjects like math, reading, and history.  As the next State Representative, Susan will work to recruit and retain the best qualified teachers and require teachers to be proficient in the subjects they teach.
Susan Morris supports re-directing money from the bureaucracy to the classroom.  She wants to give local schools flexibility in deciding how to allocate their resources.
When it comes to education Susan Morris is a parent rather than a politician.

Voters Speak up...
What has happens to the sweet little lady who “loves Rowan County”?  Although I have never agreed with Lorene Coates politically, she has never openly made her constituents appear moronic.  Her full page ad in  August 1 Salisbury Post  could have been  paid for by monies carried over from Speaker Blacks   $ 8,000 contributions to her previous campaigns  that she has refused to return.  She must not be aware of the contents of the ad or she would have never had a paid political ad questioner mailing sent to her Legislative Office for her tax payer paid assistant to retrieve.  Isn’t this against the ethics law, she just voted for?
Representative Coates did not willingly separate herself from Speaker Black as your Aug. 3 editorial suggested, but in her own words, January 31, 2006 on Fox 14 News “My opponent, Susan Morris has forced me do  this”.  Rep. Coates continues to spend all the tainted money she has collected along with yours the “fine folks of Rowan County.”
Lorene, it’s time to give the money back.  Perhaps you can arrange to meet Jim Black at the local pancake house.
Donna Peeler

Dear Editor,
Do you check your facts???
In your recent editorial regarding “Pancakes and Payola” you mention Lorene Coates bogus call for Speaker Black’s resignation.  We all know it was a phony gesture except for your paper.
Lorene only made that statement after her opponent, Susan Morris, asked her to do the right thing and return the tainted campaign money from Black.  If Susan Morris was not running against Lorene she would have said nothing and the paper know this.
If Lorene really wanted to do the ethical thing she would return all of the money she has received from Black.  She has had months to do and refused.  I think the voters have the right to know that she is using tainted funds for her campaign.
Sincerely,

Dear Editor,
You must be joking when you mentioned Lorene Coates’ half-hearted call for Black’s resignation in a recent editorial.  She only said that under pressure from Susan Morris, candidate for State Representative.  Susan called for her to return the $20,000 she has received from Speaker Black.
The money was illegally raised and Lorene should benefit from it.  Republicans and Democrats who received donations from Jack Abramhoff all returned the money.  Why shouldn’t Lorene return it?
Clearly her refusal to return these funds means that she is still deeply obligated to Speaker Black.

Dear Editor,
I expect that Lorene Coates will be part of the investigation any day now in the Pancake Payoff scandal with Speaker Black and Mike Decker.
Let’s look at the evidence:
• Lorene Coates was recruited by Speaker Black to run for office and has been one of his closest allies in the legislature.
• Lorene Coates has accepted over $20,000 in campaign contributions from Speaker Black.
• Lorene Coates has refused to return the tainted campaign funds since the scandal broke.
• A Democratic House member dropped off the payoff in our county.  There is only ONE Democratic House member in the area – Lorene Coates.

Maybe some should call for Lorene’s resignation?
Dear Editor,
When is Lorene Coates going to return the tainted money she received from Speaker Black?  He illegally raised these funds and our state representative she not benefit from his actions.
Doesn’t she have a moral obligation?  Doesn’t she want to send a message?
Clearly her failure to return this money makes her part of the problem.
                                           Yours Very Truly,

Dear Editor,
We need a change from the status quo.  That’s why I am supporting Susan Morris for State Representative this year.
Unlike the incumbent, Susan will stand up for our communities.  She will not be in the back pocket of the corrupt Speaker.  Susan Morris will also help the taxpayer by fighting to return more of their money to them.
It is time for a change and Susan Morris is the agent of change for me.

Dear Editor,
Susan Morris, candidate for State Representative, is correct.  The legislature should return the surplus to the taxpayers.  They over taxed us!
The government did not go out and work for this money.  We did.
I am glad at least one person is speaking out on behalf of the taxpayer.  That’s why Susan Morris has earned my support and vote.
Sincerely,

On the Radio...
If you wrote a job description for our next State Representative, what qualities would you want.  You would want a person who valued honesty and integrity, a person independent of the political gamesmanship at the state house, a person who would stand up for what is right, a person with business experience and the knowledge to bring fiscal stability to our state budget, and a community leader.  In the race for State Representative in Rowan County only one candidate fits the description—Susan Morris.  Susan Morris is a small business owner who is not a career politician.  Susan Morris is running to be our fiscal watchdog and to end corrupt politics at the State House.  Next November let’s send a message and elect Susan Morris our state representative.
Announcer:  Are you satisfied with the status quo in the legislature?  If you are, you don’t need to listen.  But if you want real results instead of rhetoric, then we have good news for you.
Susan: My name is Susan Morris. Like you, I’m disappointed in the ½ percent tax cut passed by the legislature which is the smallest tax cut in the history.  That’s just one of the many reasons why I’m running to be your State Representative.  Your voice in Raleigh.  We have over paid our taxes and the state has a surplus.  It is just plain old common sense and good government that the money should go back to you the taxpayer rather than increasing the size of state government again.
As a small business owner, I know what it takes to balance a budget.  And as a taxpayer, I know how hard you work to make ends meet.  As your State Representative, I will always put your needs and rights ahead of politics.
Announcer:  Please support the common sense candidate for change Susan Morris for State Representative.

Paid for by committee to elect Susan Morris

Hi this is Susan Morris candidate for State Representative.  Today I’m calling about your rights as a taxpayer.  This year our state has a huge surplus and instead returning this overpayment in taxes to you the taxpayer.  The legislature spent it instead.  They think that they can fool us with the passage of the smallest tax cut in the history of the country.  I think that we can do better.  That’s why I want to be your next State Representative.  I hope that you will join me in this important campaign by calling 704-636-7340 to get involved today.  Thanks for listening.

Hi this is your neighbor Mary.  I am calling you about the scandal in the legislature with Speaker Jim Black that has landed on our door step in Salisbury.  I don’t know about you but I am totally disgusted with the money laundering of campaign contributions and pay offs at our IHOP.  Our State Representative Lorene Coates has been part of the problem.  She has refused to return the money she has received from the Speaker and this has shaken my faith in her.  She is not the person I thought she was.  This fall I am voting against Lorene and giving someone else a chance.  Join me in sending a message by voting against Coates.
